How to use it

How to Read Strumming Patterns on Guitar

Each pattern describes how your right hand moves over the strings during the measure. The arrows indicate the direction of the strum.

Special symbols mark rests, mutes, and chucks.

  1. Direction and Strums

    • Down arrow ↓. The strum goes from the bass strings to the treble strings, using your thumb or the back of your fingernails.
    • Up arrow ↑. The strum returns from the treble strings to the bass strings, guided by the pad or nail of your index finger or thumb.
    • Mute or chuck ✕. Your palm stops the strings right after the strum, creating a dry, percussive sound.
  2. Time Signatures and Accents

    • 4/4 has four beats per measure. It's the most common in ballads, pop, and rock. Beats 1 and 3 carry the weight of the harmony. Beats 2 and 4 carry the snare drum pulse.
    • 3/4 and 6/8 are compound time signatures. They are used in waltzes, rancheras, and folk rhythms.
  3. Where to Start

Start at 60 BPM. Move your hand up and down without touching the strings.

    This is called ghost hand.

Once your movement is even and regular, strum the strings. Then add the mutes.
