What sets D# apart

D# is built from D#, F## and A#. D# is the root, F## the major third and A# the fifth. Said aloud, its notes are D sharp, F double sharp and A sharp.

From the low string to the high one you hear D#, A#, D#, F## and A#. Of the five strings you play, two give D#, the note that names the chord. The lowest note is D# on string 5 and the highest is A# on string 1.

The main D# shape needs a barre at fret 6 across five strings. String 6 is not played. Everything fits between frets 6 and 8. The second shape on this page starts at fret 11.

D#m is one change away. String 2 moves from fret 8 to fret 7, bringing in F#, the minor third of D#m. Going to Eb7, four positions stay the same. It can also be written Eb, and it sounds the same.

D# shows up in seven keys. In D# major it is the I, in G# major the V and in A# major the IV. The rest appear in the key list.

How do you prevent the D# chord from buzzing or sounding muted?
