What sets Fm6 apart

Fm6 is built from F, Ab, C and D. F is the root, Ab the minor third, C the fifth and D the sixth. Said aloud, its notes are F, A flat, C and D.

From the low string to the high one you hear F, C, F, Ab, D and F. The root, F, shows up three times in the main shape. The lowest and highest notes are both F, two octaves apart, on strings 6 and 1.

The main Fm6 shape needs a barre at fret 1 across six strings. Everything fits between frets 1 and 3. The second shape on this page starts at fret 8.

Fm is one change away. String 2 moves from fret 3 to fret 1, bringing in C, the fifth of Fm. It shares two notes with Ab, Ab and C. Going to Bbm, two positions stay the same.

Fm6 shows up in two keys. In Eb major it is the ii6 and in C minor the iv6.
