What sets G#m7 apart

G#m7 is built from G#, B, D# and F#. G# is the root, B the minor third, D# the fifth and F# the minor seventh. Said aloud, its notes are G sharp, B, D sharp and F sharp.

String by string, low to high, it plays G#, D#, F#, B, D# and G#. G# rings twice across the six strings, and it is the root. The lowest and highest notes are both G#, two octaves apart, on strings 6 and 1.

The main G#m7 shape needs a barre at fret 4 across six strings. Your hand covers three frets, from 4 to 6. There is one more position, starting at fret 11.

Change only string 4 in G#m7 and you have G#m. Inside G#m7 sits a complete B chord, made of B, D# and F#. Abm shares five positions with this shape. Abm7 is the same chord under another name.

You will find G#m7 in five different keys. In B major it is the vi, in F# major the ii and in E major the iii. The rest appear in the key list.
